Austin Based Intrapreneurship at #NewCoATX, the #1 job site worldwide is based in Austin, TX.  As the number of new products expand, the rollout of the “intrapreneur” model within the company has been critical to growth.  One example of this model is Indeed Prime, operating as a startup within Indeed. As there continues to be a shortage of in-demand tech talent, Prime has addressed this market opportunity by matching the most qualified talent to top companies.

As more tech workers indicate a preference for working in larger companies, retaining and growing this talent through the intrapreneur model is a common trend. A recent survey from Indeed Prime on tech talent and Silicon valley indicated “88% of tech workers intend to leave their present employer for another job opportunity in the future.”

Operating as a startup, Prime is free to set its own culture, stack, and processes. Unlike a traditional startup, Prime is housed within an established global company and benefits from significant infrastructural and informational gains, such as accessing Indeed’s collection of the largest set of jobseeker/employer data in the world. Join us as Shu Wu discusses Indeed’s challenges and successes in adopting the intrapreneur model.  Learn more about how Indeed Prime can help you with hiring needs.

Sign up for Indeed Prime’s #NewCoATX session happening on Wednesday, July 27th from 9:30am – 10:30am at Capital Factory, 701 Brazos Street, 16th Floor.

NewCos That Are Changing the Way We Think About Health

HealthTech is one the fastest growing industries in Austin, and in the world right now. In fact, according to Forbes, HealthTech is expected to be the most profitable industry in 2016, with a 21.6% net profit margin. It is such an exciting time to be a healthcare NewCo and we are so excited to have Austin’s most innovative healthcare companies showcasing their newest projects at #NewCoATX. Here are some of the Austin NewCos that are changing the way we think about health:

AnatoMotion is pioneering technology that assist dentists in treating bite dysfunction. AnatoMotion’s dental motion analysis technologies are allowing dentists to analyze function and choose a bite position with objective data, thus solving issues such as sleep apnea, grinding teeth and TMJ. Founded by a successful third-generation Austin dentist, this startup has built an experienced leadership team and formed strategic partnerships with some of the most well-known companies in the semiconductor and MEMS spaces.

In their NewCoATX session “Taking the Bite Out of a Startup,” Shane Matt, CEO and Founder of AnatoMotion, will introduce the IoT technology that will help catalyze a dental evolution and explain how these technologies can be used in any startup.

Presentation Location: 211 SAN ANTONIO ST.

Presentation Time: 5:00pm – 6:00pm, July 27th

Crux Climbing Center:

Austin’s newest climbing gym, Crux Climbing Center, wants to build a premier hub where climbers can perfect their craft and gather as a community. The ongoing mission of Crux is to offer everything that a traditional climbing gym does… only better. Matt and Kevin, the founders of Crux Climbing Center, took standard climbing and bouldering gym concepts and improved on them, adding 24-hour access to caves, music plug-in capability, charging stations throughout the gym, lounge spaces with AstroTurf, a top-notch retail area and cuting-edge climbing technologies, such as automated terrain that can be reconfigured.

We asked Kevin why he was excited about NewCo and he answered that, “I’m excited to share my story with other aspiring entrepreneurs. It has been one hell of a journey, and NewCo gives me a platform to share my story.” He continues that, “The name of my business is Crux Climbing Center and the most important word is Center. For too long gyms have been a place to plug in your headphones and lift heavy weights, but I’ve found a way to combine fitness and community unlike many businesses before me. I truly believe our model is something to follow and will be the new standard for the future of fitness in Austin and the world.”

The founders of Crux will be giving a presentation and tour of their space during NewCoATX. The Crux session, “New Generation of Fitness,” will delve into what the fitness facility industry used to look like, where it is headed, and why facilities like Crux are becoming the new face of fitness. According to Kevin, attendees, “are in store for a story of trials and tribulations, as well as my view of where the fitness industry is heading. I believe Crux is at the forefront of a fitness revolution, and I’d like to share why I feel that way.”

Presentation Location: 121 Pickle Rd. Ste 100

Presentation Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm, July 26th

We asked the founder of Fitppl to share with us why he is excited about NewCo and what his session will be about. We love his answer!

“I had two motivating factors for starting fitppl: passion and purpose. I believe that there must be true passion driving your life’s work. I also believe that, as well as providing quality products to customers, a responsible company must serve the best interests of the its customers as well as the community and environment at large.

I have always been interested in starting a company reflecting these core beliefs, but it took considerable amounts of time and effort to work out both a winning line of products and company philosophy. Living an active, healthy lifestyle has always been a passion of mine. Doing so has kept me mentally sharp and provided me with the stamina to experience some memorable journeys around the world. I actually began observing the health and fitness industry in my early teen years. Much of that existing industry is based upon a common, one-dimensional, cut-and-copy marketing approach; focusing mainly upon the aesthetics of “fit.” My goal is to redefine the industry standard of fit and showcase the adventures, experiences, travels, or activities a healthy lifestyle can offer.

My personal interest in reducing and (hopefully) eventually eliminating environmental pollution is how fitppl’s underlying “Ditch The Plastic” initiative came about. What ultimately launched me on my personal mission was witnessing firsthand the catastrophic plastic pollution during my travels in Thailand. The degree of man-made pollution present in what used to be a pristine ocean environment was, quite simply, shocking to see. That trip to Thailand took my thinking to the next level: from a company I wanted to start to something I had to start.

Luckily for me, my home town of Austin proved to be the perfect city to launch fitppl. The community has been immensely supportive of the fitppl mission from the start. NewCo provides an exciting opportunity to share fitppl’s mission with like-minded individuals and companies who understand the importance of social entrepreneurship. The session will be an informative and entertaining display of how fitppl’s philosophy was cultivated, accompanied by some of my travel photography and cinematography which captured these pivotal moments. Attendees will learn about our Ditch The Plastic initiative and I’ll share some very interesting and eye-opening facts. At the end, I’ll host a tasting of our delicious products with a Q&A session, and send attendees off with some new insight (and some goodies!)”

Presentation Location: Capital Factory 701 Brazos St. #1600

Presentation Time: 3:30pm – 4:30pm, July 26th

Nixable is giving people the power to beat nicotine addiction. The company’s first product, Nix, is the world’s only programmable, dynamic-dosing, nicotine inhaler designed to gradually wean users off nicotine.

Join Nixable’s cofounder, Caleb Smith, during “Hacking Addiction,” as he shares how his father’s struggle to quit smoking, and subsequent diagnosis with throat cancer, spurred Smith to leave a promising career in film to invent a completely new technology based on all-consuming idea: What if nicotine addiction could be hacked? Can quitting smoking be automated?

NewCo attendees will then be invited to join a moderated group discussion:

The FDA recently passed a ruling regulating electronic nicotine delivery systems (specifically, electronic cigarettes) with the intention of safeguarding consumers. However, opponents of the new regulations claim that they may actually harm consumers by creating insurmountable barriers to innovation. How can governments and technology companies best work together to encourage innovation while ensuring the public safety?

Presentation Location: Capital Factory 701 Brazos St. #1600

Presentation Time: 5:00pm – 6:00pm, July 27th

Cloud 9’s these solution through their mobile application that helps hospitals and other healthcare organizations provide more mental health services to more patients through a unique combination of patient assessments, video talk therapy and behavior tracking.

NewCos That Are Saving Mother Nature

Austin is known not only for its large population of techies, but also for its large population of hippies! These two groups have combined forces to save the earth and change the world. Hill Country Conservancy:

Hill Country Conservancy marshals public and private resources to preserve the natural areas and scenic vistas, aquifers and springs, rivers and streams, working farms and ranches, and the rural heritage of the Central Texas Hill Country for people to enjoy and cherish for generations to come. This organization has been working to create the first regional trail system in Central Texas. Once complete the 30-mile Violet Crown Trail will provide a unique recreational experience as it passes through the urban wildlands of the Barton Creek Wilderness Park, the City of Sunset Valley, and eventually into Hays County. Along its route the trail will connect scenic natural areas to neighborhoods, shopping centers, a library, and public parks. Passing near the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Violet Crown Trail will head south, winding through the rolling countryside of the City of Austin’s Water Quality Protection Lands in a uniquely natural setting. The Violet Crown Trail represents the greater vision of Hill Country Conservancy’s work to get people out on the land. Users will have the opportunity to experience conservation lands like never before – surrounded by wildlife, clean streams, and the breathtaking views of land preserved by HCC and its partners.

In their NewCo session, titled “Connecting Communities to Nature: The Violet Crown Trail,” George Cofer, Executive Director of HCC, will explore how the Violet Crown Trail will cultivate a spirit of environmentalism and engagement with local nature. This type of eco-activism is becoming especially important due to Austin’s growing population of transplants, who may not have the understanding of how to take care of Texas’s unique landscape.

Hungry Planet Technology

Hungry Planet Technology (HPT) believes that, “modern agriculture is failing us in every way possible. Crops are less nutritious, treated with chemicals, tended by exploited migrant workers, consume 80% of potable water, and have a carbon footprint equal to the transportation sector. This is unsustainable. In contrast, indoor farming grows more nutritious crops, uses a fraction of the resources, no chemicals, relies on no petroleum, and is tended to by a new generation of farmers who are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.” That is why Hungry Planet Technology wants to catalyze an agricultural transformation. This green company is going to “light the future of food” by manufacturing intelligent LED lighting and automation equipment in order to grow the healthiest, freshest crops indoors near dense urban populations.

HPT’s intelligent lighting uses bio-sensors to monitor and record plant physiology and then makes corresponding adjustments to all of the environmental inputs of indoor farming, including light spectrum, duration, temperature, fertilizer regiment, ambient CO2 levels, and much more. The light ‘learns’ over time  what ideal combination of resources are required to optimize the growth and qualitative characteristics of each crop. In their NewCo session, “The Coming ‘Solid State’ Transformation of Farming, HPT will discuss how they are applying optoelectronics (LEDs), microelectronics, and machine learning to transform our food system, slash the consumption of water and fertilizer, eliminate toxic pesticides, rid farming of fossil fuels, cut farming’s massive carbon footprint, and feed an increasingly hungry planet.

AUSTIN, TX – MAY 31, 2016 – On July 26th and 27th, NewCo returns to Austin for its second year. The annual business festival will showcase the latest trends in the city’s fastest growing industries, including technology, education, social good and sustainability. Thanks to a record turnout from Austin’s business community, this year’s festival has been expanded to two days.

Drawn by Austin’s booming tech and music industries, hundreds continue to move to Austin every day. As the city’s population continues to grow, so do its industries, particularly mobility, technology and social good entrepreneurship.

“Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and also one of the best places for startups and innovation. People in Austin are driven by a sense of purpose within their work.  They seek to answer ‘Why?’ their work is valuable. NewCo Austin uncovers and celebrates that ‘Why’, highlighting the city’s very best mission driven organizations,” said Joshua Baer, Executive Director of Capital Factory, NewCo’s affiliate partner in Austin.

NewCo ATX will showcase the most cutting edge companies that call Austin home. “Austin inspires the world, serving as a site for the exchange of creative ideas, not just during its world-famous events, like SXSW and Austin City Limits, but also year round, through the work of local organizations like Capital Factory, Entrepreneurs Foundation, and the Austin Chamber of Commerce,” said NewCo’s Chief Evangelist and co-founder Brian Monahan. “NewCo’s mission is to identify and celebrate new kinds of companies big and small, creating positive change in how they work, what they create in the world, and who they are as citizens of their community. That is exactly the type of energy driving Austin today.”

NewCo identifies and connects the engines of positive change in our society, celebrating “business on a mission” through festivals and media. NewCo Festivals are inspiring “un-conferences,” which highlight mission-driven, innovative organizations that are changing their industry, community, and even the world at large. NewCo attendees can explore all that the city has to offer; going inside company offices, meeting company founders, and engaging in meaningful presentations.
